Women's Health Q & A

What is involved in women’s health care?

At a well-woman exam, you’ll have your vitals checked, and your provider from IAM Healthy talks to you about lifestyle choices to improve your health, such as diet and exercise.

A pelvic exam that involves an evaluation of your external and internal genitalia is also included, usually once you’ve reached the age of 21. You also undergo a Pap test, which screens you for cellular abnormalities that can lead to cervical cancer.

After age 40, recommend our provider recommends you go for screening for breast cancer – a mammogram. They set up a referral for you to get this important test done.

How does a well-woman exam contribute to a woman’s health?

A well-woman exam includes a pelvic exam, breast exam, and a comprehensive check of your overall health. Well-woman exams serve many purposes, including:

  • Recognizing risk factors for disease
  • Early detection of medical problems
  • Assessing your need for preventive care practices

A well-woman exam is your yearly check-in with your provider at IAM Healthy. You establish a relationship through these annual visits and can have any questions or concerns about your gynecological health addressed.

When does a woman need a well-woman exam?

Women should get their first well-woman exam around age 13-15 and schedule them once per year afterward. Unless a girl has symptoms that require it, a pelvic exam isn’t usually included in these first women’s health appointments. Visits during the early teen years serve as a time to ask questions, check overall health, and establish rapport.

A woman’s health needs change throughout her life. Even after you’ve gone through menopause, you still benefit from specialized care to address your increased risk of certain health conditions, including osteoporosis, high blood pressure, and incontinence.

How are sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and birth control addressed?

If you’re sexually active, ask about getting tested for STDs. These tests include swabs, urine tests, and blood tests. They’re not a routine part of your pelvic exam, so it’s important you bring up any concerns.

The providers at IAM Healthy can also counsel you on birth control methods, including the pill, IUDs, and hormonal implants. Get all your questions answered so you can determine the right method for you.
